Well, here is my official notice. I have taken a position at another business. I will be working in the office at Upper Iowa Tool & Die. I will finish the paper on May 22, because for 23 years, that has been my work week!
Monday is putting the paper together. Tuesday is sending it off and starting the next one.
The biggest reason I am leaving is weekends, evenings and holidays. I am just plain tired of meetings and events taking time away from family events. Oh sure, I have been able to work around it most of the time, but not always.
For 23 years, I have not been able to take a week’s vacation and have from Friday after work until the following Monday off. I usually looked at emails, and then came in on the second weekend to get stuff ready for the paper on Monday.
So, I’m not going to miss that. I am also not going to miss covering parades. Even when I was at the Lime Springs Herald, I had to attend 2-3 parades a year. Since working at the Times Plain Dealer, that number more than doubled. I have told people I hate parades. I am hoping that I can enjoy parades after this. I won’t have to stand by myself to get a good shot, I will be able to sit with my family and enjoy the show like everyone else.
So there are things that I won’t miss. But there are a lot more that I will miss.
I will miss the people. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with people for stories. When I was hired, my boss, Dan Evans told me, “Everyone has a story.” He is correct. I have met some awesome people, and I will definitely miss that part of my job.
I said earlier that I won’t miss attending meetings. But that isn’t entirely true. I’m kinda nosey, so I have enjoyed learning things and researching other stuff so I can let the readers know what is going on.
I have plans to write stories once in a while. I can’t commit to anything right now, but I’m sure I will want to do some writing again.
I had fun working for the paper, but I am looking forward to something different.
For the last time . . .
