Norman Borlaug Farms Intern Arrives with a Passion for Learning and Engagement!

HOWARD COUNTY - Brianna Matheny from Brownton, Minnesota has recently arrived in Howard County to begin her summer internship with the Howard County Extension and the Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation. Matheny, currently a student at Iowa State University majoring in Agricultural Education and Global Resource Systems, is excited to be working in the field she is passionate about.
Growing up, Matheny was actively involved in 4-H, FFA, and sports throughout high school. She has a background in showing swine, competing in draft horse hitch and cart competitions, and serving as a camp counselor. In college, Matheny remains involved in multiple clubs across campus and has studied abroad in Uganda.
During her time in Howard County, Matheny has set ambitious goals for her internship. She plans to help fix up the birthplace farm of Norman Borlaug, a renowned agronomist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Additionally, she hopes to host a special FFA day, create reading programs with area libraries, and develop a lesson for homeschoolers to get involved with the farm.
Matheny's ultimate goal for this internship is to determine if she is more drawn to extension education rather than classroom education. She dreams of becoming a teacher or entering the field of extension education to have the opportunity to do service work and travel the world during summers off.
When asked about her motivations for this internship, Matheny shared, “You get out of it what you put into it. I just want to help people.” With a passion for agriculture and a drive to make a positive impact, Matheny is sure to make a lasting impression during her time in Howard County.
