Cresco Knights of Columbus present over $2,500 to Special Needs Association

CRESCO - With many smiles, Betty Schmitt of Special Needs Association of Howard County, received a check for $2,575.30 from the Cresco Knights of Columbus this past Friday afternoon.

Schmitt met with Grand Knight, Wayne Mashek, of the Cresco Knights of Columbus #1571 in receiving the check at his place of business at A&W.  

“We’re extremely grateful for this donation,” stated Schmitt, who was elated with such a generous gift. “The Knights of Columbus have always been so gracious and kind to us every year.  Just a terrific group of people.”

Schmitt, who was nearly in tears upon receiving the check, stated the funds are used to help “anyone in need in Howard County” and not just for those who have a disability.  

Schmitt, who is president of Special Needs Assn. of Howard County (SNAHC), said that anyone with cancer, heart problems, or anything serious with their health, can call and ask for help.

“We can give them a gas card, or a card for groceries (if needed) in helping an individual,” stated Schmitt.  “It all depends on the need.  There are times, when we present a card to someone, they’ll be weeping once receiving the gift and often give us a hug.”

She stated that sometimes, such as a cancer patient, they’ll need to take three or four trips a week to Mayo at Rochester for medication or therapy, and it can sometimes drain on someone’s bank account.  

“We just try to help everyone we can,” added Schmitt.  

The group also does events for those with disabilities, such as dances in the spring and fall, or providing free buttons in allowing the person to go to the Howard County Fair and seeing the Grand Stand events.  They’ll even help with groceries, if that individual is in need. 

Schmitt asked that if anyone is in need to please just call 563-547-4843.  There is a short application that you’ll need to fill out to receive any request.  

To raise the money, the Cresco Knights used eight local businesses to do a Tootsie Roll Fundraiser, giving out toosie rolls for donations.  They were grateful to use the storefronts of Ruppert Ace Hardware, Dollar Fresh, Dollar General, Fareway, Fisks, Kwik Star and Ox & Wren.
