CRESCO - The Mighty Howard County Fair and the Howard County Farm Bureau are joining forces on a new family attraction at the Howard County Fairgrounds: Grandpa Tom’s Barne, an interactive, kid-sized barn designed for hands-on learning, imaginative play, and family connection. The project honors Tom, the longtime Executive Secretary/Manager of the Howard County Agricultural Society and Executive Director at the Association of Iowa Fairs.
Set to open this summer, Grandpa Tom’s Barne will introduce young visitors to agriculture through engaging, age-appropriate activities. Inside, children will be able to “milk” Maggie the Cow, a kid-friendly model that teaches the basics of hand-milking; explore an agriculture-focused interactive kiosk; and dive into a corn play area alongside other farm-themed experiences. The Barne is planned as part of a new family-friendly gathering area next to the fairgrounds gazebo and will be surrounded by a petting zoo, a toy tractor course, a small outdoor toy play space, and family entertainment such as Nick’s Kids Show—giving kids room to play and parents a place to catch their breath.
Tom and his wife, Sue—well known locally for their Iowa Fair Tours—have visited fairs across the state to see what resonates with families. “Sue and I travel to a lot of fairs and have seen 2–3 barns in other fairs and they are always a big hit,” Tom said.
