Sickles, Ristau win league events; boys, girls both place well back

    WAUKON – Ashley Sickles and Raquel Ristau both won their specialties at the Northeast Iowa Conference track meet held at Waukon High School Monday, May 5, but both the boys and the girls finished well back in the team race.
    Sickles was not pressed as she easily won her specialty, the high jump, with a leap of 5’4”. No other conference competitor went higher than 4’10”.
    Ristau made the shot put competition more suspenseful. She waited until one of her last throws to surge past the field with a toss of 38’11.25”. One of her top competitors, Chelsea Humpal of Decorah, was second at 38’5.5”.
    Jessy Stika was the only other Cadet girl to contend for individual honors. She placed second in the discus with a toss of 118’3”. Humpal won the event with a toss of 128’9”. Crestwood’s Bre Balk was fourth with a toss of 89’4”.
    The highest finishes for the boys was Trent Kuhn and David Hoehne in the 100 meter dash and B.J. Praska in the high jump. Kuhn placed third in 11.73, edging Hoehne who was timed in 11.74 and finished fourth.
    Praska cleared 5’8” to claim third in the high jump as Sam Noel and Ben Groth, both of Waverly-SR, tied for the win at 6’0”, a height Praska cleared earlier this year.
    The boys also claimed two fourth place finishes. Brian Fravel circled the oval twice in 2:04.32 to place fourth in the 800 meter run and the 4x100 relay of Ben Obermann, Bryce Campbell, Kuhn and Hoehne placed fourth in :46.07.
    The Cadet girls placed seventh in the team race as Decorah won the meet with 160 points. Second was New Hampton with 121 points followed by Waverly-SR, 108; Charles City, 63; Oelwein, 53; Waukon, 44; and Crestwood, 40.
    The Crestwood boys placed seventh as Charles City won with 144.5 points followed by Waverly-SR, 138; New Hampton, 80; Waukon, 75.5; Decorah, 58; Crestwood, 33; and Oelwein, 29.
    Scoring went to the first six finishers in each event. Receiving team points for Crestwood were the following:

    4x200 relay: 5, Jami Henry, Shelly Grube, Kirscha Faldet, Ashley Sickles, 1:54.85.
    400 meter hurdles: 6, Kenzie Smith, 1:12.81.
    800 medley relay: 6, Jessica DeVries, Josie Gooder, Ashley Sickles, Kirscha Faldet, 2:02.6.
    High jump: 1, Ashley Sickles, 5’4”.
    Discus: 2, Jessy Stika, 118’3”; 4, Bre Balk, 89’4”.
    Shot put: 1, Raquel Ristau, 38’11.25”.
