The Crestwood boys and girls were finally able to compete in a home track meet last Thursday and they both took advantage of the opportunity as both teams placed second behind talented Osage teams.
The meet was called short of completion when lightning was observed, although the majority of events were held.
Osage won the Crestwood Co-Ed boys’ crown with 140.5 points followed by Crestwood with 97 points, South Winneshiek, 76.5, Postville, 47 and Dunkerton, 26.
On the girls side, the Green Devils captured the title with 147 points followed by Crestwood with 99 points, Postville, 87, Dunkerton, 56 and South Winneshiek, 50.
The Crestwood boys won two events and placed second in three other events.
Walking off with winning efforts were Brandon Kerian in the long jump and B.J. Praska in the high jump. Kerian, participating in the long jump for the first time, leaped 19’2.75”. Praska won the high jump clearing 6-foot, winning by two inches.
Second place efforts were recorded by Casey Stika in the shot put with a distance of 44’3”, beating out teammate Adam Praska who was third at 41’5.5”; David Hoehne in the 100 meter dash in 11.80, only .12 faster than the time turned in by fellow Cadet Ben Obermann; and Derek Hruska in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:56.18.
Topping the Cadet girls were Kenzie Smith and Taylor Vrieze as the teammates finished one-two in the 400 meter low hurdles. Smith recorded a time of 1:15.84 with Vrieze trailing at 1:23.69 to take second.
Kirscha Faldet placed second for Crestwood in the long jump with a leap of 14’1.5” and Jessy Stika was second in the discus with a throw of 107’2”.
Second place performances were also recorded by Emma Baker in the 3000 meter run as she posted a time of 12:13.08, the 4x800 meter relay, which crossed the finish line in 11:16.40, and the 400 meter shuttle hurdle relay, which posted a time of 1:10.18.
The Crestwood girls were without two of their veteran performers as Ashley Sickles and Raquel Ristau were in Des Moines competing in the Drake Relays. Sickles placed fifth in the high jump and Ristau was 11th in the shot put.
Poor weather continues to hamper the track teams at Crestwood as the Cadets have had few outings at all and none under good conditions. “We just haven’t had the opportunity to see what some of the kids can do, especially underclassmen, and to work on techniques,” admitted boys’ Coach Chris Lentz. “A good example is (Brandon) Kerian in the long jump. He was entered in the long jump for the first time (Thursday) and goes out there and wins it.”
Another example is Trent Kuhn in the 100 meter dash. Kuhn’s time of 11.84 was good enough for third place in the varsity event but he was competing in the junior varsity dash, which he won.
Both the boys and girls were to participate in meets Tuesday (yesterday), the girls at the Waverly Invitational and the boys at New Hampton. The boys are also to participate in a meet at Waukon tomorrow (Thursday) and return to Waukon on Monday, May 5, for the NEIC meet, which was originally scheduled for Oelwein but was moved. The girls are to participate in the Charles City Invitational tomorrow in preparation for the conference meet at Waukon Monday.
