WAVERLY – Kayla Kubik fired her second straight 48 to lead Crestwood girls to their second straight dual golf win in as many outings this spring.
Kubik was medalist as the Cadets nipped host Waverly-SR, 214-220. Earlier she captured medalist honors as Crestwood defeated Charles City, 199-235, on the Comet course.
“Kayla’s 48 (against Waverly) is remarkable given the windy conditions,” said Coach Tom Spindler. “We played under extremely tough conditions as it was very windy – 30 mph with gusts to 40. I was surprised at the scores considering the conditions. Even though we shot 15 strokes more (than against Charles City), they did well in the wind.”
Coach Spindler was also pleased with the win over Waverly because of the experience returning for the Go-Hawks. “Waverly has three returning starters who are all good. They are one of the contenders in the conference,” he pointed out. “So, to beat them on their course on only the second round of the year is very encouraging. It was Waverly’s fourth meet.”
Runner-up medalist was Waverly’s Laura Duitsman as she fired a 49.
Joining Kubik on the score card against Waverly were Molly Engleman with a 53, Samantha Thomson with a 55 and Abby Gooder with a 58.
Against Charles City, Engleman and Thomson both fired a 49 to go along with Kubik’s 48, and Caitlin Kelly added a 53. Engleman and Thomson were runner-up medalists.
The win over Charles City was the first outing of the season for the Cadet girls as poor weather this spring has kept the girls indoors.
“This was our first time on a golf course this spring, including practices,” pointed out Coach Spindler. “The girls surprised me with how well they played considering no time on a golf course. Our number was very low for a first meet. It bodes well for us this season.”
Coach Spindler is obviously pleased with the early success of his team. “We have a good team. Kayla, Molly, Samantha and Caitlin all played well.”
The junior varsity team also posted a win over Charles City, 244-280. The Cadet scored included Brittney Holstrom, 58, Abby Gooder, 63, Sonni Slifka, 66, and Tess Fosaaen, 67.
