CRESCO - Two Cadet golfers normally down the list on the Crestwood varsity golf team didn’t let the elements bother them as they helped the Blue and White score a 164-172 victory over Clayton Ridge here Friday evening.
Cadets Andy Stapelkamp and Flynn Kelly each carded a 40 on the Cresco Country Club course. The low score tied the two Cadets with Taylor Bergan of Clayton Ridge for medalist honors.
Filling out the Cadet card were Ian Fitzgerald, who fired a 41, and John Thomson with a 43.
Kelly had to rally after a slow start. He carded a birdie 3 on the par four fifth hole and concluded the score card with a birdie 3 on the par four ninth hole. The birdies were needed as he fired a double bogie 7 on the first hole and back-to-back bogies on the third and fourth holes.
Stapelkamp’s round was more consistent as he came into the club house with five 4s and four 5s that included pars on holes number one, two, four, five and nine.
Fitzgerald also got off to a slow start as he was five over after five holes, but came home with four straight pars.
It was the only outing of the week for the Cadets and this one was in doubt most of the afternoon. “When it was nice, we didn’t have anything scheduled,” commented Cadet Coach Lynn McCormick. “We didn’t know if we were going to get this one in or not because of the rain. But it broke up enough that we decided to give it a try. And, I hated to cancel it after they (Clayton Ridge) had come this far (Guttenberg).”
Other varsity scores turned in for Crestwood included Brandon Neuzil, 44, and Kyle Christianson, 45.
The match started about thirty minutes late as the teams and coaches waited for the rain to quit. When the boys did tee off at about 4:30 p.m., strong, swirling winds plagued the golfers through much of the evening.
The Crestwood junior varsity team posted a 200-204 win. The junior varsity scorers were led by Ryan Hagen with a 49, Craig Ohloff and Curtis Murphy each with a 50 and Nick Hagen with a 51.
The Cadets were using the dual as a tune up for the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament Crestwood hosts on Monday, May 12. Tee off is scheduled for 10 a.m. on the Cresco course. Waverly-Shell Rock, the only conference school to defeat the Cadets, is considered the favorite. The Crestwood loss was by 12 strokes and came on the opening match of the season at Waverly.
The win gives Crestwood a 5-1-1 season record.
