Boys’ meet
Crestwood Boys’ Track Coach Chris Lentz was happy to see several Cadets record personal records on Thursday.
“Kade Munkel set a personal record by clearing 6 feet, 1 inch to take first in the high jump,” Lentz said. “Our 4x400, 4x200 and 4x100 teams all ran their best times of the season. In the shot put, Kody Berns (40-1, fifth); Wyatt Scheidel (39-0, sixth); Colby Frazer (38-7.5, seventh); Landon Simiele (33-7); and Nick Knobloch (30-1) all had personal best throws. Kody Berns was really excited to get over 40 feet.”
Lentz noted all the Cadets battled hard against stout competition. Chris Guest had Crestwood’s highest finish as he took gold in the 110 hurdles in 15.85
“We were going against New Hampton, Turkey Valley and South Winn,” Lentz said. “All these teams had guys that can really run. Facing competition like this was good for us because that helps us run faster, and it pulls us around the track.
“Overall, we’re a young team. We’ve got a couple seniors who are running track for the first time. Now that the weather has warmed up (recently), we’ve been able to do some serious practice on our track, which definitely helps us.
“All of our guys are competing hard and getting after it. We still need to get past our comfort zone in some races, and we need to make it hurt a little more (as we cross the finish line). Some guys haven’t had the time to condition themselves because we haven’t been on the track very much this spring to train.
“At this point of the year, we’re in a catch-22 situation. When we had the bad weather earlier, we didn’t want to pound the guys by running them in the gym or the hallways. Now that we’re running multiple meets during the week, we don’t want to over-train the guys on a Wednesday when you have meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“This point of the season is crunch time. We need to keep dropping times the best that we can. Our 4x400 team is young, but they’re improving their times. If we can keep this group together, they’ll be a pretty decent team (down the road). Our shot put guys are improving their technique. Our 4x100 team ran OK at 47 seconds, but we’d like to get it closer to 45 seconds,” Lentz said.
Team standings: 1. New Hampton 138; 2. Turkey Valley 96; 3. South Winn 95; 4. Dunkerton 92; 5. Osage 91; 6. Crestwood 60; 7. Postville 13; 8. Riceville 2.
