Crestwood girl harriers nab first at Osage, boys fourth

CRESCO - The Crestwood varsity and Junior Varsity girls’ teams both captured first place on Sept. 12 at the Osage Invitational. The Class 2A No. 4-ranked Cadet varsity girls’ team had seven medalists, and the JV squad also tallied seven girls who earned ribbons for placing in the top 15.
Medalists for the varsity girls’ team included: No. 4 Ellie Friesen (first place, 19:25.13); No. 7 Cassidy Ihns (second, 21:28.56); No. 13 Hope Dohlman (third, 21:31.10); Emily Friesen (10th, 23:15.17); 11. Brynn Bodermann (11th, 23:15.38); 15. Rachel Steffen (15th, 23:42.04).
JV girls who earned ribbons included: Annie Mast (second, 25:18); Katie Saner (third, 25:40); Libby Labosky (fifth, 26:38); Taylor Shelton (seventh, 27:17); Destiny Hodges (eighth, 27:32); Kelsey Stortz (ninth, 27:46); and Madi Brace (10th, 28:01).
Crestwood’s Junior Varsity boys’ team earned second place while the varsity boys squad finished fourth overall with two medalists. Bryden Juelsgaard (seventh, 19:17.26) and Carlos Beascochea (14th, 19:38.28) nabbed medals for the Cadet varsity boys’ team. JV boys who earned ribbons included: Colter Bye (seventh, 21:58); Matthew Slifka (ninth, 22:20); Kristian Szajna (13th, 22:31).
Cadet Head Coach Jim Obermann gave kudos to all the Crestwood runners.
“We competed well across the board with our JV and varsity girls,” Obermann said. “Both teams earned convincing wins and really ran well on a very tough course with some steep hills.
“In the JV girls’ race, Annie Mast and Katie Saner led for most of the race, and they attacked the course well. Libby Labosky also had a good performance as she took fifth. Taylor Shelton, Destiny Hodges and Kelsey Stortz all ran a strong race.
“Our varsity girls’ team also looked strong. Ellie Friesen ran a great race to earn first. It was also nice to see Cassidy Ihns, Hope Dohlman, Emily Friesen, Brynn Bodermann and Rachel Steffen run well and earn medals. The varsity girls had the right mindset going in the race, and I’m very proud of their effort,” Obermann said.
The coach also praised the JV and varsity boys’ teams.
“After a tough race at the Luther All-American (on Sept. 9), all of our boys really stepped up well at Osage and gave a great effort,” Obermann said. “In the JV boys’ race, Colter Bye ran his best race to place seventh. Matthew Slifka, Justin Nibaur and Kristian Szajna also led the way for our JV team.
“Our varsity boys’ team is not at full strength because Nathan Martinek (ranked No. 28) and Ryan Steffen were not able to compete, but we had other guys step up. Bryden Juelsgaard (seventh) ran his best race, and Carlos Beascochea (14th) continues to get stronger.
“Kyle Quam ran his best race as a Cadet. Garret Ollendieck, Boston Ferrie, Blake Murphy and Jon Millage also ran well. It was good to see the boys accept the challenge (of the course). I’m very proud of their efforts,” Obermann said.
