Crestwood boys drop two against No. 1 NH, downed by Oelwein

NEW HAMPTON - Playing against Class 2A No. 1 New Hampton on the road on Tuesday, June 6, the Crestwood baseball team battled hard in both games before losing both contests, 3-10 and 3-4.
Taking on Oelwein at home Friday, June 9, the Cadets struggled at the plate as the Huskies downed Crestwood, 8-0, to drop the Cadets’ overall record to 4-9.
Crestwood will host Waverly-SR on Wednesday, June 14 and will play a doubleheader at Waukon June 16.

In game one, Crestwood took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before New Hampton stormed back to earn a 10-3 win.
The Chickasaws scored three runs in the first, one in the second and two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
“New Hampton is a very solid team,” Cadet Head Coach Gary Steffen said. “They have a lot of good seniors, and we knew playing them would be a challenge.
“Clayton Ollendieck struggled early in the game, but he got better as the game went on. We had a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth before we committed a few errors later in the game, which helped New Hampton pull away late. I was happy with our effort early in the game, but I was disappointed we let up later in the game,” Steffen said.
Austin McAllister and Sawyer Peckham each had one single. Shane Vokaty had one run and one run batted in. Trae Pecinovsky had one hit, one run and one RBI. Clayton Ollendieck had one double, one run and one RBI.
Ollendieck was the losing pitcher. He went six and two-thirds innings, allowed eight hits, 10 runs (eight earned), four walks and struck out four. Frank Hrdlicka tossed one-third of an inning.

In game two, New Hampton rallied from a 3-1 deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win, 4-3.
Crestwood scored two runs in the second and one in the fifth to grab a 3-1 edge going into the bottom of the seventh. New Hampton closed the gap to 3-2 with an RBI single before the Chickasaws tallied two runs on a passed ball, which allowed the winning run to score.
“Our starting pitcher, Ethan Hoppe, threw an excellent game,” Steffen said. “He had a no-hitter going until the seventh when New Hampton got a double. We got out of a lot of jams (defensively) early and made some big plays in the field. Unfortunately, we gave up a lot of walks.
“I was pleased overall with our effort in game two. We had some big hits, and we took New Hampton to the wall. We just couldn’t finish the game,” Steffen said.
Shane Vokaty had two hits, including one triple, one RBI and one stolen base. McAllister had one hit and one run. Clayton Ollendieck tallied one double and one run. Jon Henry had two hits, including one double. Colten Wiley had one hit, one run and one stolen base. Kristian Szajna had one stolen base.
Szajna was the losing pitcher. He tossed one-third of an inning, allowed one hit, two runs (no earned runs) and walked one. Ethan Hoppe went six innings, allowed one hit, two earned runs, six walks and struck out three.

Oelwein 8, Cadets 0
The Oelwein Huskies broke open a close game with five runs in the top of the seventh en route to an 8-0 win over the Cadet baseball team Friday.
The game was scoreless until Oelwein tallied two runs in the top of the fourth. Steven Nicolay singled to drive in one run, and Colton Barker scored on a Cadet wild pitch.
Oelwein posted one run in the sixth when Tyler Hefel drew a bases loaded walk to drive in one run.
The Huskies took advantage of a couple Cadet errors to score five runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
“(Starting pitcher) Kristian Szajna was solid through three innings before he started to struggle in the fourth,” Steffen said. “I was disappointed in our offense. We couldn’t get things going at the plate. We played flat and lost our focus. We need to fight harder during games and not let up.”
Crestwood finished the game with only three hits. Trae Pecinovsky, Kristian Szajna and Austin McAllister each had one single for the Cadets. Clayton Ollendieck drew one walk.
Kristian Szajna took the loss on the mound. He went four innings, allowed two hits, one earned run, two walks and he struck out one batter. Frank Hrdlicka tossed one inning. Spencer Cuvelier pitched one and two-thirds innings. Zack Lane tossed one-third of an inning.
