DECORAH - After Kingsland tied the game at 47-all at the end of the third period, the Cadets reeled off a 15-2 run in the final period to conquer the Knights, 62-49, on Dec. 15 at Luther College in Decorah.Crestwood led 12-10 after one period before Kingsland took a slim 31-30 halftime advantage. Both teams traded buckets throughout the third period as the game was tied heading into the fourth.
Cadet Coach Lynn McCormick said his team was stronger in the second half.
“We started to play better (late in the game) and wore Kingsland out a little bit,” McCormick said. “We attacked their zone better (in the second half), and we hit some inside shots. Finally, in the fourth quarter, we got the ball into the post more.
“Defensively, we did a good job. Anytime you can hold your opponent to 49 points, that is pretty good. We picked up our defensive effort in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter.
“Offensively, Nathan Martinek hit some big three-pointers for us, and Boston Ferrie had some big shots inside for us. We still need to work on knocking down our free throws as a team, but we did play solid on defense,” McCormick said.
Nathan Martinek led the Cadets with 19 points, including five three-pointers, had one rebound, one assist and one steal. Zack Lane had 15 points, six rebounds and one assist. Shane Vokaty tallied eight points, including two three-pointers, three assists and two rebounds.
Carter Henry had seven points, eight assists, four rebounds and two steals. Boston Ferrie had nine points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Jon Henry had two points and two rebounds.
