Crestwood boy cagers edge Clear Lake in double overtime, 87-83

WAVERLY - Showing great heart and determination, the Crestwood boys' basketball team rallied from a five-point deficit in the first overtime to beat Clear Lake, 87-83, in double overtime on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at Waverly in the Class 3A Substate 2 quarterfinal playoff game.

The win allows the Cadets (9-13) to advance to the substate semifinal against Waverly-Shell Rock (16-6) at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 at Waverly. The winner of this game will play either Charles City (17-4) or Webster City (14-8) in the substate final at 7 p.m. on Feb. 26 in Mason City. The loss ended Clear Lake's season at 17-5.

During Tuesday's game against Clear Lake, the Cadets took a 67-66 lead on two free throws by Clayton Ollendieck with 26 seconds left in the fourth period. However, the Lions grabbed the lead back at 68-67 on a layup by Zach Lester with 1.9 seconds left. On the inbounds play, Clear Lake fouled Crestwood's Zack Lane, who made one of two free throws to tie the game at 68 and send it into overtime.

In the first overtime, Clear Lake took a 75-70 lead with 36 seconds remaining before a layup and a three-pointer by Kristian Szajna tied the game at 75 with 12 ticks left. Two free throws by the Lions gave them a 77-75 lead, but Szajna converted another layup with two seconds left to tie the game at 77 and sent it into the second overtime.

In the second overtime, Crestwood snagged an 84-81 lead on a layup by Zack Lane with 30 seconds left before two Clear Lake foul shots cut the lead to 84-83. Szajna made one free throw with 11 seconds left, grabbed a rebound and hit two free throws with six seconds left to clinch the well-deserved win.
