Crestwood boy cagers down Waukon, defeated by L-P

CRESCO - It was a down-and-up week for the Crestwood varsity boys’ basketball team as the Cadets fell to Lyle-Pacelli, 60-63, on Jan. 25; and they defeated Waukon, 60-50, on Jan. 26 at home.
L-Pacelli 63, Cadets 60
Facing Lyle-Pacelli on the road Friday, the Cadets fell behind 28-30 at halftime and were unable to rally as L-P notched a 63-60 win.
“We didn’t play well overall, and our defense was not good,” Cadet Head Coach Lynn McCormick said. “We didn’t shoot the ball very well. During the week, we couldn’t get many practices in because of the weather. Lyle-Pacelli took advantage of things we gave them on offense, and they made a lot of three-pointers.”
Cadet statistics
Zack Lane posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Nathan Martinek had 12 points, including two three-pointers, eight rebounds and one assist. Carter Henry had 10 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Andy Osmonson tallied six points, including two three-pointers, and three rebounds. Jon Henry had five points, four rebounds and one assist. Shane Vokaty had four points, five rebounds and two assists.

Cadets 60, Waukon 50
Taking on Waukon at home on Saturday, the Cadets held off a late surge by the Indians to earn a 60-50 win to improve to 9-6 overall.
Waukon grabbed an 18-11 lead after one period before Crestwood went on a 17-6 run in the second period to take a 28-24 halftime lead. The Cadets led 39-33 after three periods. Waukon cut Crestwood’s lead to 56-50 with 26 seconds left before two free throws each by Jacob Andera and Nathan Martinek clinched the win.
“We got out and ran on offense, which helped us get some easy baskets especially  in the second half,” McCormick said. “We didn’t start the first or third periods great, but once we got running on offense, that wore out Waukon a little bit.
“Whenever we can run more, we are a better team. Nathan Martinek did a good job attacking the basket, and our guys hit some free throws down the stretch. Defensively, we played well. Shane Vokaty did a great job on defense,” McCormick said.

Nathan Martinek led Crestwood with 21 points, including two three-pointers, had seven rebounds, four assists and one block. Zack Lane had a double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. Jacob Andera had 11 points, including two three-pointers, three steals, two blocks and two assists.
