Cadet ninth grade football team bounces Decorah

 

DECORAH - The Crestwood ninth grade football team rallied from an early 8-0 deficit to defeat the Decorah Vikings, 32-22, Friday to improve to 2-0 overall.
Decorah scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass and added the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead with 2:37 left in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Cadet Carter Henry bowled into the end zone on a one-yard run to cut the lead to 8-6. The two-point run failed. 
With only 58 seconds left before halftime, Crestwood’s Kade Munkel grabbed a 24-yard touchdown pass from Henry. Reid Wiley caught the two-point pass to give the Cadets a 14-8 halftime lead.
With 7:33 remaining in the third, Henry broke free on a 47-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 20-8. The two-point pass failed.
Decorah cut the lead to 20-14 with a one-yard touchdown run at the 3:38 mark of the third. However, the Cadets answered quickly as Munkel fielded the ensuing kickoff and raced 93 yards to the Vikings’ two-yard line. On the next play, Treyton Burnikel reached paydirt to extend the lead to 26-14 with 2:41 left. The two-point run failed.
Early in the fourth, Decorah sliced the lead to 26-22 on a 15-yard touchdown pass and a two-point run. Not to be outdone, the Cadets came back with a 46-yard touchdown pass Henry to Munkel with 5:52 remaining in the game to push the lead to 32-22 and clinch the win. The two-point run failed.
Crestwood will host Hampton-Dumont at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8.
