Cadet girls punch State ticket in 10 events, boys qualify in 3

DECORAH - Cool temperatures and a steady rain didn’t bother the Crestwood girls’ and boys’ track teams on May 10 at the Class 3A State Qualifying Meet as both squads turned in many outstanding performances.
In the girls’ meet, the Cadets qualified for the State Meet on May 17-19 in Des Moines in 10 events while the Crestwood boys’ team advanced to State in three events. The 10 events is the most the Cadets have qualified in for State since 2012.
In the team standings, the Cadets girls’ team placed second with 142 points, and the boys’ team took seventh with 56 points.
The Crestwood girls’ team will compete in the following events at State: 3000 meters (Ellie Friesen, first at qualifier, 10:30.14; Cassidy Ihns, third, 10:38.13); long jump (Katie Saner, first, 16-10); discus (Sharon Goodman, first, 117-8); 100 dash (Saner, first, 12.50); distance medley (Brynn Bodermann, Annie Mast, Saner, Ellie Friesen, second place, 4:15.27); 1500 meters (Ellie Friesen, first, 4:49.30; and Ihns, fifth, 5:03.70); 200 (Saner, first, 25.53); 800 (Ellie Friesen, first, 2:21.02); 4x800 (Emily Friesen, Rachel Steffen, Hope Dohlman, Ihns); and the shot put (Kristen Reicks, third, 36-4.75).
By qualifying in four events at State this year, Friesen has advanced to State in 16 total events in her high school career, which included two years at Osage and two years at Crestwood.
In the boys’ meet, Crestwood’s Logan Albert placed first in the high jump by clearing 6 feet to advance to State. Chris Guest booked his ticket to State in the 110 hurdles (second place, 15.42) and the 400 hurdles (second, 56.79).
Girls’ meet
Cadet Girls’ Coach Jim Obermann was thrilled to see the girls perform very well in several events.
“All of the girls competed extremely well against a very talented field of athletes,”  Obermann said. “The 3000 meters and 4x800 relay events were loaded with talented girls. I was very pleased to see that all our girls were focused and ready to go during the meet.
“Katie Saner had a tremendous night qualifying in four events, and she also set a new school record in the 200. Ellie was solid as she always is. What she has done (qualifying for State in four events for four straight years) is quite an accomplishment. Her winning two events at the Drake Relays was a big hurdle she got over, and we’re hoping that gives her extra confidence going into the State Meet,” Obermann said.
The coach gave kudos to all the Cadet athletes for giving an outstanding effort.
“Cassidy Ihns ran super in the 3000 meters and the 4x800,” Obermann said. “She showed great resilience. Hope Dohlman also ran well in the 4x800.
“I was also pleased with our field event competitors. It was great to see Sharon Goodman win the discus event, and Kristen Reicks competed well in the shot put to place third. Rachel Steffen also had a great night in the 400 hurdles. Overall, this was one of the best performances our team has had at a State Qualifier Meet,” the coach said.
Going into the State Meet, the coach is optimistic the Cadets can continue to post strong performances at Drake Stadium.
“In Class 3A, there are a lot of salty schools, but we feel good about our chances at State,” Obermann said. “We know it will be quite a battle for our athletes at State, but we welcome the challenge. Myself, Coach Karen Steffen and Coach Keith Slifka are very proud of all of the girls. We know the girls will take the confidence they gained from this meet to Des Moines. Our girls have the potential to score a lot of points at State.”

Boys’ meet
Crestwood Boys’ Coach Chris Lentz said his athletes gave a strong effort.
“Going into the State Qualifier, we thought we’d have a good chance to advance in the high jump at the 110 hurdles,” Lentz said. “We made it in those events, and it was nice to see Chris also qualify in the 400 hurdles.
“Logan Albert has been jumping well in practice. It was good to see him get his personal record by clearing six feet. Logan has come a long way this year, and this is a good time for him to peak.
“Chris Guest kicked it into high gear down the backstretch to place second in the 400 hurdles. In the 110 hurdles, he had the best time going into the State Qualifier, and he ran well to place second. We’re really proud of Chris for getting it down.
“We also had a lot of guys post personal records at the meet. Zack Lane had a PR in the 110 high hurdles (17.22) and the 400 hurdles (1:01.84). Our 4x100 relay team also had a PR (47.0). We faced a lot of tough competition at the State Qualifier, and it was a meat grinder. I was pleased with how the guys competed,” Lentz said.
