Cadet girls nipped by No. 1 Kee; bounce WSR, Turkey Valley

 

CRESCO - The Crestwood varsity softball team went toe-to-toe for seven innings with Class 1A No. 1 Lansing Kee on June 6 at home before the Kee Hawks came out on top, 2-1.
The Cadets bounced back on Thursday, June 8, with an impressive 9-1 win over Waverly-Shell Rock at home.
Playing at Turkey Valley Friday, June 9, the Cadets chalked up 11 runs in the fifth inning during a 17-0 victory in five innings to improve to 11-4 overall.

The Cadets battled extremely hard against No. 1 Kee June 6 at home, but the Kee Hawks still came away with a 2-1 win. Kee had been averaging nine runs per game before the game against Crestwood.
Kee scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Madelyn Gruber doubled to drive in one run. In the third, Courtney Cooper reached base on a Cadet error, which allowed one run to score.
The Cadets cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth when Annie Mast crushed a solo home run to left field. Mast’s homer was the only hit of the game for Crestwood. Kelsey Burnikel drew a walk for the Cadets in the first inning to account for the team’s only other baserunner.
“Kee’s pitcher, Kendra Cooper, really throws the ball well,” Cadet Coach Doug Sickles said. “It’s tough to see the ball well against a pitcher like her. She overwhelmed us. Laken Lienhard pitched well enough for us to win, and our defense kept us in the game.”
Laken Lienhard was the losing pitcher for the Cadets. She went seven innings, allowed eight hits, two runs, no walks and she struck out 13 batters.
Kendra Cooper was the winning pitcher for Kee. She allowed one hit, one run, one walk and struck out 11.

Cadets 9, WSR 1
Crestwood scored at least one run in every inning during a strong 9-1 win over Waverly-SR Thursday at home.
In the first inning, Laken Lienhard led off with a solo home run to left field to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.
The Cadets added single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to push their lead to 4-1. Kaylie Henry drove in one run in the second, Shannon Pisney crushed a solo homer in the third and Lienhard hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Crestwood tacked on two runs in the fifth to go ahead 6-1. Kaylee Thomas ripped a single to drive in one run, and Kristen Reicks reached base on a fielder’s choice, which allowed Keelee Andera to score.
The Cadets concluded the scoring with three runs in the sixth. Lauren Reicks hit a double to drive in one run. Megan Ryan reached base on a Go-Hawk error, which allowed two runs to score.
“It was nice to see us break out our bats for this game,” Sickles said. “We scored in every inning, and I was extremely pleased with the way all the girls played. Laken Lienhard dominated the game (in the pitching circle), and her lead off home run gave us a boost. This was the first time in a long time that we beat Waverly, and our girls were excited about that.”
Shannon Pisney had three hits, including one home run and one double, three runs and one RBI. Laken Lienhard had one home run, one double and two RBI. Lauren Reicks had two singles, one double, one run and one RBI. Keelee Andera and Kayla Lentz each scored one run.
Annie Mast had one single. Kaylie Henry had two hits and one RBI. Kaylee Thomas had two singles, one double and one RBI. Kristen Reicks had two hits and one RBI.
Laken Lienhard was the winning pitcher. She went seven innings, allowed five hits, one earned run, one walk and she struck out nine batters.

Cadets 17, TV 0 (5 in)
Crestwood held a 6-0 lead after four innings before erupting for 11 runs in the fifth en route to a 17-0 win over Turkey Valley Friday on the road.
The Cadets scored three runs in the first inning, added two in the second, one in the fourth and 11 in the fifth. 
During the fifth inning, Laken Lienhard broke the game open for Crestwood as she ripped two grand slams. Lienhard leads the Cadets this season through 15 games with eight home runs and 25 runs batted in.
“In the top of the first, Megan Ryan opened the game for us with a three-run home run, which was big for us,” Cadet Coach Doug Sickles said. “Laken hit two homers for us in the fifth, and Shannon Pisney also had a home run. Home runs really carried us against Turkey Valley.
“Lauren pitched well for us to start the game, and Laken did a good job closing the game in the fifth,” Sickles said.
Lienhard finished the game with four hits, including two home runs and one triple, scored four runs and had six RBI. Pisney had one home run, three runs and one RBI. Lauren Reicks had two hits and two RBI.
Megan Ryan posted three hits, including one home run and one double, two runs and five RBI. Thomas had one hit and one RBI. Kristen Reicks had two hits. Kaylie Henry had two hits and two runs. Taylar Pecinovsky had two hits, two runs and one RBI. Annie Mast and Keelee Andera each scored two runs.
Lauren Reicks was the winning pitcher. She went four innings, allowed two hits, no walks and struck out five. Lienhard went one inning and allowed two  hits.
