Lime Springs - Mavis O. Shaffer, age 91, of rural Lime Springs, Iowa left her earthly home for her heavenly home on Sunday, April 22, 2018 surrounded by family at her farm west of Cresco.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Jerico Lutheran Church, Jerico, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Peter Faugstad. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mavis Oriette (Anderson) Shaffer was born Sept. 17, 1926, the daughter of Ola J. and Mabel (Foss) Anderson at rural Saude, Iowa. She was a lifelong member of Jerico Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was baptized by Rev. H.M. Tjernagel on Oct. 17, 1926 and confirmed in her faith by Rev. Neelak Tjernagel on July 21, 1940.
Mavis attended rural schools in Howard County and graduated from Cresco High School in 1945. She then attended Upper Iowa University, where she received her teaching degree and taught at rural one-room schools in Chickasaw County.
On June 7, 1948 she was united in marriage to Glenn A. Shaffer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple dairy farmed in Howard County, purchasing a farm on Highway 9 near Lime Springs in 1959, where she continued to farm until her death.
She was an active member of the Jerico Ladies Aide and member of Howard County Farm Bureau for over 50 years.
She is survived by six children, Glenna (Tim) Walton of Cresco, Sharon (Jim) Losch of Marion, Iowa, Daniel Shaffer of Cresco, Pamela (Pat) Byrnes of Cresco, Betty Rowell of Marion and Neil Shaffer of Lime Springs; five grandchildren, Mike (Jill) Walton of Cresco, Jami (Jay) Weems of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Kevin (Tressa) Walton of Vinton, Iowa, Kari (Cedrick) Schlecht of Cresco and Nikki (Chris) Shimek of Cresco; nine great-granddaughters; sister-in-law, Doris Williams of Urbandale, Iowa; brother-in-law, Donald Pankow of Parkersburg, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn in 2004; three sisters, Orletta Ball, Janice Shaffer and Mabel Pankow; and one brother, Merlin Anderson.
