Formerly of Cresco - James Herold, age 87, of Brownsville, Minn. and formerly of Cresco, Iowa, died Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco with the wake service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Notre Dame Parish on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at 11 a.m., with visitation continuing for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
James Albert Herold was born on Nov. 15, 1930 in Brookings, S.D. He was the son of Albert and Mary (Thielen) Herold and graduated from Assumption High School with the class of 1948. Two years later, James enlisted with the United States Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1954. On June 18, 1955, he married Janice Miller at Assumption Catholic Church. To this union four children were born, Thomas, David, Patricia and Daniel. Janice passed away in 1986. James married Evelyn Nielsen in January 1988. She passed away in 2012.
James worked at the Puritan Locker in Cresco before becoming a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. He walked about 17 miles a day for 30 years delivering mail. 
James was very active at Assumption Church as a Eucharistic Minister and member of Knights of Columbus. Outside of his church volunteering, he was past commander for the Cresco American Legion. He liked trying his luck at the casino, bowling, cards and fishing, as well as watching and cheering on the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeyes.
James is survived by his children, David (Sheri) Herold of Cresco, Patricia Rosendahl of Cresco and Daniel (Molly) Herold of Rochester, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Judy Herold of Rochester; stepchildren, John (Ruth) Nielsen of Bruno, Minn., Wilma (Dave) Schoh of Caledonia, Minn., Paul (Connie) Nielsen of Brownsville, Minn. and Karen Nielsen of Decorah, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by two sisters, Florence Powers and Agatha Sistrunk, and one brother, Melvin Herold.
James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice in 1986; wife, Evelyn in 2012; a son, Thomas in 2015; brother, Edwin “Penny;” and sisters, Mildred Schnoor, Velma Leigh, Marjorie Heaston and Gertrude Jensen.
