Cassidy Ihns nabs second, Cadet teams run strong at Luther meet

DECORAH - Battling some of the top runners from Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota at the Luther All-American Meet on Saturday, Sept. 8, the Crestwood girls’ and boys’ cross country runners turned in several stout performances.

The Crestwood varsity girls’ team finished 10th out of 26 teams with 304 points, and the Cadet varsity boys’ team placed 13th out of 23 teams with 331 points.

Cadet senior Cassidy Ihns posted the highest finish for Crestwood in the varsity girls’ race as she finished second in a time of 19:12.6 seconds. Teammate Hope Dohlman placed 31st overall in 21:04.8.

“Cassidy led the race for most of the way,” Cadet Head Coach Jim Obermann said. “She has put herself in a good position to run (with all of her training). She really got after it at the meet, and it’s great to see her having a good season. Hope Dohlman, Annie Mast and Libby Labosky all ran strong as well.”

In the varsity boys’ race, Crestwood junior Bryden Juelsgaard tallied the highest finish among the Cadets as he took 36th place in 18:04.6. Senior Nathan Martinek placed 51st in 18:18.5.

“Our varsity boys’ team took 13th place, which was a good finish,” Obermann said. “Bryden Juelsgaard ran his best race of the year. Nathan Martinek, Justin Nibaur, Ethan Govern, Nathaniel Bigalk, Boston Ferrie and Kyle Quam all ran good races. Up and down the lineup, our boys ran well.

“Overall, we competed very well across the board from the Junior High races to the varsity races against a very tough field of competition. I was pleased with the way our runners approached the meet,” Obermann said.

In the Junior Varsity boys’ race, Kyle Quam placed 114th in 20:53.7 for the Cadets. In the JV girls’ meet, Isabella Lehmkuhl finished 130th in 25:51.7 for Crestwood.

In the Junior High girls’ race, Cadet Olivia Ollendick took first place in 13:32.0, and Dominic Bigalk was 10th for Crestwood in the boys’ race.
