May 11-17 is designated National Police Week. Communities throughout the U.S. will hold ceremonies and observances commemorating past and present law enforcement officers.
Peace Officers Memorial Day will fall during the week, on May 15. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726, proclaiming May 15 be commemorated annually for peace officers.
In 1994, the law was amended to direct government buildings should to display their U.S. flags at half-staff each year on May 15.
