The Lime Springs Public Library has grown a little bigger since last December, opening up new space for patrons to browse through books, check out displays and read to kids.
The building that formerly housed City Hall that sits adjacent to the library was renovated to add a new room to the existing library. The recently completed new room features newly released books, magazines, books-on-tape, children’s books and a children’s reading area.
Renovations also included putting in handicap-accessible bathrooms, revamping a storage closet and rearranging the front desk. New curtains, carpet and a new air conditioner were also installed.
The Library Board of Trustees began raising funds for the project in February of 2007, eventually raising a total of about $80,000, including four grants they received.
“It was a challenge, but it worked,” said Betty DeRuiter, library trustee.
Construction began last December. Although a few finishing touches need to be completed, the majority of the project is complete.
Library Director Janet DeVries said the newly added space allows library staff more freedom when creating book displays and hosting special programs and events at the library. The library hosts programs such as children’s story hour, movie nights and a summer reading program, among others, throughout the year.
An open house for the library will take place at the library, from 2 to 5 p.m. May 10. The Lime Springs Community Art Show will also be held at the library during this time.
The library is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 8 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
