A fire destroyed a barn on a farm east of Elma Friday morning.
Don and Tina Shatek's barn, located at 13126 200th St., was engulfed in flames when a neighbor called the Elma Fire Department to the scene at 9:34 a.m.
“It was fully involved when we arrived,” said Elma Fire Chief Darrell Knecht.
No one was hurt in the fire. No animals were in the barn at the time of the fire.
Don and Tina Shatek were not home when the fire started. Their daughter, Brittany, 18, was asleep in their house.
Knecht said the fire appeared to have started in the upper level of the barn. The cause is still under investigation.
The Protivin and Alta Vista fire departments assisted the Elma Fire Department at the scene. The Elma Fire Department remained on the scene until 1:36 p.m.
