Cresco Police Chief Mark Kissinger will give a program on identity theft at 7 p.m. April 15 at the Cresco Public Library.
The free program, “Identity Theft: Yes, it could happen to you,” will inform people about the growing dangers of identity theft and what they can do to protect themselves.
Kissinger will discuss the different types of identity theft, such as email and phone call scams asking people for personal information, such as a social security number, bank account information or credit card information.
“Anytime anyone is asking for your information on the phone or for your credit card [information], it’s probably not real,” Kissinger said.
He will explain how to avoid falling for identity theft scams, which have been increasing in instances nationwide over the past several years.
“It’s not as bad [here] as urban areas, but it’s still a problem that people need to be aware of,” Kissinger said.
The program will be held in the Library Program Room. Refreshments will be provided.
