CRESCO - Board members of Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation were able to cross off a wish list item when Boy Scout Justin Kerian, from Cresco Troop #63, decided to do his Eagle Scout project at the Boyhood Home of Dr. Norman Borlaug.
Justin, with the help of his uncle, Kevin Kerian, handcrafted a sign announcing the landmark. The scout routered it out, sanded it, painted it and installed the sign, which is visible from both sides.
He chose a project at the farmstead because it is just a mile-and-a-half from his own home. “Plus I’ve come here a lot for scouts and school. Dr. Borlaug was an awesome person and helped a lot of people. This is my way of giving back for what he did,” Justin explained.
It took the ninth grader about 100 hours to complete the project. Eagle Scout projects involves a lot of research, paperwork, getting donations and completing the project before the age of 18. Panos Farm Supply donated the materials.
Laura Schmauss, president of NBHF, was very excited to get the sign installed. “It’s something we’ve needed for a long time.”
A long-time board member, Tom Spindler explained, “We’ve talked for years about having it done.” He said people turn down the gravel road, but there was no sign telling them they had arrived at the farm. No sign until now, that is.
Justin started his career in the organization back in second grade, when he joined the Cub Scouts. He became a Boy Scout in sixth grade. Since then, he has received 21 merit badges, along with his life, star, first class, second class, and tenderfoot badges.
His experience in scouts has taught him a lot. Justin stated, “I enjoy the outdoor part of scouts the most, and all the opportunities to do things I normally would not do. I like all aspects of it, and it is a great program.”
He looked back on some activities in which he participated. “The funnest thing I have ever done was one year at camp where everyone was having a great time and the mood of everyone was so positive, and that made it more fun.”
Although only a freshman, Justin already has some future plans, including getting his Eagle Scout award. “Then I want to be involved in scouts by being a mentor to the younger scouts. I then plan to go to Iowa State after high school for engineering in the agricultural field.”
Justin’s parents, Randy and Lori Kerian, have a lot to be proud of in their soon-to-be Eagle Scout. But then again, they were also mentors to him and supported him in his journey through the scouts. Congratulations to all!
