Howard County jail officially closed

The last six inmates to be held in the Howard County jail were taken to Winneshiek County on Thursday, Feb. 8.

The jail, which was built in 1882, is officially closed until the new one is built and ready for customers in March 2019.

Dispatch of the law enforcement center will be moved to the old engineer's office in the basement of the Courthouse around Feb. 21. At the same time, the Sheriff's office will be moved to the Community Health building just north and east of the current jail.

Demolition will likely begin in March, weather permitting.
