Fire destroys Mike Grube house

A fire at the Mike Grube home on Old New Oregon Road, south of Cresco, was completely destroyed by fire. According to Cresco Fire Department's Second Assistant Chief Wayne Kerian, the call went out at 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday night, Feb. 5. He believes there were no injuries.

Mutual aid was called from Protivin and Ridgeway Fire Departments. Kerian figures roughly 60 firefighters responded to the fire.

At the present time, no cause for the fire is known.

From reports on social media, Grube was awoken by his fire alarm and did not have time to save anything. His friend Jeff Wilson stated, "This man would help anyone in need without question. He is a very hard worker and has done a lot in our community. Now he needs our help."

For several hours Thursday morning, Cresco firefighters stood watch over the home to make sure nothing was taken.
