    Other contest winners were Whitney Carpenter from Lime Springs, Jessica McGee from Notre Dame Catholic School, Jayden Burke of Elma and Kaylee Nicoll and Emily Sickles, both from Crestwood Elementary. The poster contest was for all fourth graders attending school in the Howard-Winneshiek School District. Cresco Bicycles sponsored the bike along with EMS.

Dairy Month Feature

    At this time last year, Nathan Upah only vaguely knew who Norman Borlaug was. He certainly never thought he’d be living on Borlaug’s childhood farm for a month.
    Upah, who will enter his third year at Iowa State University this fall, is the first student to take part in a new internship being offered by the school at Norman Borlaug’s childhood farm.

    Melissa Hvitved recently took the helms at the NICC – Cresco Center as the center’s new coordinator. Hvitved started at her new position May 12.

    The Nationally renowned Colts Drum and Bugle Corps from Dubuque will put on a free performance at the Crestwood High School Stadium, at 7:30 p.m.  June 5.

    Two University of Iowa graduate students recently accompanied Cresco native Benje Tallman around town to shoot footage of Tallman recollecting what it was like to grow up in a small town setting.

    Student fees at Howard-Winneshiek schools will increase slightly starting next fall.

    Several Crestwood High School students received awards and letters in band this year.

           Registration materials for the 2008 Wisdom and Wellness Summer Enrichment Program are now available. All children are welcome to register for any of the courses being offered at Elma Elementary Charter School and Lime Springs / Chester Elementary School.

At-large position to open up this fall

    Fifth grade students from schools throughout the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District and Notre Dame Catholic School spent time learning about natural resources  at Prairie's Edge Nature Center on Thursday, Natural Resources Day.

    Plantpeddler was selected as one of only five growers in the country to grow plants for the Disney Garden program.

    Ten Crestwood Junior High School students were chosen by choir director Sarah Holten to participate in the 2008 Honor Youth Choir in Oelwein on April 28.     Crestwood Alternative High School will relocate next fall, leaving its current downtown location and moving into the Heritage Events Center.
