Cresco, Iowa -

Strong winds or a possible tornado damaged about 25 trailers early Thursday morning at the Featherlite Trailers Davis Corners location.
The damage was confined to trailers in a small area of the pre-shipping trailer lot. Fourteen trailers were either overturned or received more severe damage. Minor damage occurred to a few other trailers in an isolated section of the lot.
The damage was discovered by Featherlite personnel arriving for work at 6:30 a.m.
Featherlite officials said it appears as if a tornado caused the damage, but there were not any tornadoes in Howard County Thursday night reported in the National Weather Services’ database.
“It looked as if the tail of a tornado touched down on our lot, played with a few trailers for a split second and then withdrew into the sky,” Featherlite National Sales Manager Randy Lewis said. “Less than five percent of our inventory was disturbed, and all of that was right in the center of our trailer shipping lot.”
Lewis said the damage was confined to a space of about a hundred square feet.
“The surrounding trailers were unmoved. We were very lucky. If the twister had stayed on the ground and set down about two hundred feet to the northwest, the corporate headquarters, service center and 800 trailers would have been turned into recycling material,” Lewis said.
