Cresco, Iowa -

Alliant Energy encourages its customers to be alert for any suspicious activities related to their energy service. Customers need to stay ‘security-smart’ by practicing the following tips:
Beware of the possibility of imposters posing as Alliant Energy workers. Imposters may contact customers by phone or approach their homes or businesses threatening to disconnect energy service if the customer does not provide payment with a credit card or bank account number.
Alliant Energy workers dispatched to complete work in our customers’ communities will not require payment to avoid disconnects, restore electric service or trim trees that may impact electric service.
Do not provide personal or financial information and call 1-800-ALLIANT (1-800-255-4268) if you are uncertain the ‘worker’ is from Alliant Energy.
Customers approached or contacted by utility workers should ask to see an official Alliant Energy identification card or badge. Utility workers who are assisting Alliant Energy on restoration efforts or other projects will also have official identification.
Alliant Energy does not contact electricians on behalf of customers to make wiring or electrical repairs on their homes or businesses in order to have electric service restored.
Call 1-800-ALLIANT to verify the situation and report suspicious persons or activities.
Contact local law enforcement immediately to report suspicious activity.
Write down license numbers and description of suspicious persons or vehicles.
If possible, keep an eye on neighbors’ property and report suspicious activity.
“We want our customers to remain security-smart if they are contacted by someone threatening to disconnect their energy service if they do not provide personal or financial information,” states Vern Gebhart, Vice President of Customer Operations-West.             “Unfortunately, there are some that seek a financial gain at the expense of our unsuspecting customers. We ask that our customers stay alert to any suspicious activity. If our customers suspect something suspicious, they should immediately report the incident to local authorities.”
Alliant Energy customers experiencing an electric outage or that may have other electric service questions are encouraged to call 1-800-ALLIANT.
