Cresco, Iowa -

The prom won’t be just for high school students come this spring.
Michael Stevenson, a senior at Crestwood High School, is in the process of organizing a free prom for area senior citizens. The prom will take place from noon to 4 p.m. April 13 at the Expo Center.
Seniors don’t usually have activities like this, Stevenson said. He saw the lack of such activities as an opportunity for him to organize a special occasion designed especially with senior citizens in mind.
“We’ll play songs from their era and they can just have fun,” Stevenson said.
The volunteer-driven prom, which is open to all senior citizens, will feature a d.j., bingo, card games, snacks and beverages, among other possible activities yet-to-be planned. The dance will be semi-formal, but Stevenson said no one will be turned away, if they choose not to dress up.
The high school senior came up with the idea after attending Wartburg College’s High School Leadership Institute in Waverly last summer. High school students attending the summer camp were trained in organizing and implementing leadership projects in their local communities. Several students from other schools attending the camp had held a senior citizen prom in their communities, and Stevenson decided it sounded like a good idea for Cresco.
Members of Crestwood High School’s National Honor Society chapter will volunteer alongside Stevenson at the dance. He said the Cresco Chamber of Commerce has also been helping him organize the event.
