Cresco, Iowa -

The Seniors Against Investment Fraud through the RSVP volunteer program is warning seniors and others to be aware of fraudulent email and activity aimed at stimulus payments.
Recently, both Kathy Barloon, RSVP Director and Lyle Otte, Volunteer Coordinator have received emails with the IRS logo encouraging them to fill out a form with personal information in order to receive their rebate. The letter even went so far as to warn them of the penalties involved with providing fraudulent information.
AARP is providing the following cautions and warnings regarding the Economic Stimulus Rebate: All communications will come from the IRS in writing.  Avoid providing information to those who communicate in other ways.  The IRS or representative will never call, email or stop by your home asking for your social security number or bank account information so that you may receive the rebate.
People who normally do not need to file a tax return but who received at least $3,000 from a combination of Social Security benefits, veterans benefits and earned income in 2007, must submit a simplified version of a 1040A tax form to the IRS in order to receive a stimulus payment. Individuals who normally do not have to file an income tax return have until October 15th to file the special 1040 tax stimulus form with the IRS.
These forms are available at the Decorah Public Library or call your local library to see if they have the Tax Stimulus packet. Questions about the Economic Stimulus Payment can be directed to the IRS directly by calling 1-800-829-1040.
